Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 Gameplay Review
Ghost Warrior 2 features all the features of a typical modern military FPS: linear corridors full of coarse enemies, tactical explosive barrels, one-dimensional characters that speak to military jirgas, and things exploding. But the difference here is that instead of blowing your way through these tunnels of scripted war nonsense, you are sneaking out. This is a feature length stealth section. Much of the game is spent walking in the bushes and crawling past guards. It would be nice if you weren't fighting the psychic army. If you were to be seen for even a fraction of a second, the whole base would turn its guns on you, somehow knowing where you are thanks to the brain of some terrible terrorist hive. Then you'll die, and you'll be forced to repeat the tiring ten-minute sneak peek thanks to frustrating checkpoints. The most successful are missions where you stand on top of an enemy base and assist troops as they enter. All of your targets are marked for you by a spotter, but there is some element of strategy and time in getting the guards out while their teammates are on the other side. They're just shooting galleries, though, and just for fun, they're off wrestling with awesome stealth AI. These were my favorite moments, simply because they were so easy I could tear them apart without spending too much time in tears.
I barely needed to play Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. It's like a Simon Ces game. Come here Shoot this man. Set your rifle here. Stick to these guards. Kill them Go there now Even when you leave your spotter, your superiors are giving orders to stab you on the radio. Soldiers must obey orders, but they are also sometimes able to make decisions and are expected to.
There are some impressive looking environments, courtesy of CryEngine. The first chapter shows you passing through a tropical holiday resort and later you fight on the streets of war-torn Sarajevo. But it doesn't take long to realize that as beautiful as they are, the surfaces are just static movie sets. I was running for cover, and the game started screaming at me, "Leave the mission area," even though I was surrounded in the woods.Places look great, but it's all a delusion.
