Sniper Elite 3 Gameplay Review

The terrible trademark of the series, a slow-moving camcorder that follows projectiles through bones and organs with X-ray vision, is here and still misses that point. Gore is funny, sometimes, but after the 50th brainstorming I stopped it.

I'm not interested in how the pill breaks the skull, or the lungs, or the testicles. I don't like sniping for all the damage that pills do to human bodies. I love sniping because a great distance shot is a combination of reasoning and conscience that feels almost supernatural to pull. I like the moments when I ask myself, "How did I do that?"
At regular levels of difficulty, Sniper Elite deprives you of that feeling. Depending on your scope, you can enable 'Focus Mode'. This is a 'hold your breath to stabilize your scope' function in most sniper games, but Sniper Elite also has a red box where your bullet will go, if you turn on the ballistics. Considering gravity and wind speed.
There is no joy in clicking on the right side of the screen, no one in guessing and thinking that makes a good shot a good shot. As in the Sniper Elite V2, the strategy support in the custom difficulty settings can be turned off completely. I highly recommend doing so, but I'm disappointed that SE3 expects me to rely on the Magic Ballistics Calculator instead of training me in its world loyalty. There are a lot of unlocked reticles, but there is no way to zero in on the scope, and there is no exercise limit with goals at fixed distances for me to correct my understanding of their markings. The Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm are much better in that respect.
I learned through repetition, and it was worth all the shots I made that I never thought I could do. For example, I hit a commander at least 100 meters as he was descending into the metal belly of his tank, his hat barely visible under the hatch below. Later, I saw a sniper far above a tower. The way he stood, I could only see his elbow. It doesn't matter if I just point and click a red box. I guessed half an inch down and just a few pixels to the right of my reticular cross, and I shot his elbow myself. As a shooting gallery, Sniper Elite 3 would be great, but that's it. A faint expression of snapping, which is about patience, positioning, and stealth as much as it is intended. The SE3 campaign strives to accelerate these things, and rejects the trend of linear, seat-powered rides, for which I appreciate it. This is a huge improvement over the Sniper Elite V2, that's for sure.
There are eight missions, and with the exception of the first tutorial mission, all are large and open, with secret and secondary objectives and multiple paths. I am seldom pushed in one direction or I am clearly told how to solve a problem.
In the first real mission, for example, I sneak around German camps to find the killer officers and search for their bodies for documents. I can shoot them from a long distance which is not fully known, then sneak in and get my reward, or I can first hide and cut their throats from behind. Or I can make a ton of noise and run with my sub machine gun in the hope that I won't die before I can shoot everyone else. I can lay Bobby Traps, throw stones to distract the guards - all your usual sneak peeks - but I never have to do one thing or another. It's a lot of fun to plan and execute, and Sniper Elite 3 gives me the freedom and tools to do so. The biggest problem is the enemy AI. At the least difficulty, the enemies are lobotomized - I saw a run towards the first wall in pursuit of me. At the most difficult, enemies are lobotomized and extremely aggressive. Nor is it much fun to talk to them, except to put another hole in their head to finish the job, and it's easy to take advantage of the system. Shoot a rifle, and the enemies run to hide. Stay longer or take more shots, and they will come to you. However, run for a while, and they will shrug the corpse off their feet and walk back. Normally, I can only go back to the part of the surface that I already cleared, then go back to where I was.
One feature in particular helps to hide the interesting: Sound masking lets you carefully take rifle shots on time without giving up your position. Tracking my target while I'm waiting for the audio cover - a backfire generator, artillery fire - puts a lot of strain on my technique.
When that happens, though, firefights are often the result of technical issues rather than reckless shooting.
